Northeast Patients Group has signed leases to open medical marijuana dispensaries in Portland and Hallowell.

On Tuesday, Executive Director Becky DeKeuster told Mainebiz that the organization plans to open its Portland dispensary in a vacant, 6,500-square-foot space at 685 Congress St., but still must go through the city’s permitting process. The site is expected to start operating in November, MaineToday Media reported. In Hallowell, NPG has leased space downtown above the The Liberal Cup, a restaurant and brew pub, with plans to open by the end of October. Augusta-based landlord Kevin Mattson told MaineToday he’s been working with NPG for months to find a location in or near Augusta.

The nonprofit holds four of the state’s eight dispensary licenses and has been the last license-holder to open any facilities, delayed by a lack of funding. But this summer, it finalized a $1.6 million investment deal with California-based The Farmacy Institute for Wellness and former NBA player Cuttino Mobley.
