ELLSWORTH, Maine — A Sullivan woman who avoided jail time after her son took her pot brownies to school last fall ended up in jail this weekend after she allegedly tried to steal $82 from the local Walmart, according to police.

Amanda L. Hiser, 33, was arrested Saturday on a charge of theft by unauthorized taking after she allegedly tried to get a refund on items she had not purchased, police indicated Monday.

Hiser is accused of taking an old receipt into the store, gathering items off the shelves and then taking them to the customer service counter for a refund, even though she had not paid for the items she had with her. Among the merchandise she tried to get refunds for were a pair of Jordache jeans, three DVDs, a bamboo lighter and some Sprite soda, Lt. Harold Page of the Ellsworth Police Department said Monday.

Hiser was given a refund of $82.21 for the items but was stopped by Walmart officials before she left the building, Page said.

This past summer, Hiser received a fully suspended 90-day sentence in jail after she pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of endangering the welfare of a child. She also was ordered to serve a year of probation.

The plea deal with the Hancock County district attorney’s office was a result of the Oct. 30, 2012, incident in which her son, who then was in eighth grade, took her pot brownies to Mountain View School in Sullivan and shared them
