OLD ORCHARD BEACH β€” The town of Old Orchard Beach has continued a moratorium on medical marijuana caregiver storefronts, but has put on hold any plans for an ordinance to regulate such businesses in light of upcoming state laws.

The Town Council on Tuesday voted unanimously to extend a moratorium on registered medical marijuana caregiver storefronts to Oct. 7. The moratorium was first enacted on Feb. 6.

Medical marijuana caregivers are those registered by the state to grow medical marijuana for designated patients.

The town had enforced the moratorium to allow it time to create an ordinance to regulate such businesses. An ordinance change to prohibit medical marijuana storefronts had been scheduled for a vote on Tuesday. However, the council decided to remove the item from the agenda and not consider the proposed ordinance change at this time, given information by the town planner.
