COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP/WSAZ) — People in Ohio are one step closer to receiving medical marijuana.

The first dispensary is ready to open its doors, and the first batch of marijuana is now being tested.

All medical marijuana must be tested by a state certified lab before it’s sold, so that’s the last part of the process before it can hit the shelves.

Officials say that the testing process won’t take long and they estimate the product will hit the shelves in three to five days. So far only one dispensary, 14 cultivation sites and two labs have a certificate to operate in Ohio.

A representative with the Ohio Department of Commerce says the delay in other dispensaries, growth sites and labs getting up and running is because it’s a completely new program.

The dispensary that is expected to be the first to open in Ohio is located in Wintersville, but a dispensary called Buckeye Botanicals is expected to open in a couple weeks. A cultivation site in Ironton expects to produce their first batch in the next few months.

Only those who are registered in the program will be able to receive the drug.

The first step to become registered is to visit a doctor with a certificate to recommend that can confirm you have one of the qualifying conditions.

The conditions include: cancer, epilepsy, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, AIDS and PTSD, among others.

The next step is to complete an online registration form and pay a fee, and the last step
