Marijuana dispensary heading to Hallowell

HALLOWELL — Northeast Patients Group is in talks to operate a medical marijuana dispensary at 115 Water St., city officials confirmed today.

The company holds licenses to operate four of Maine’s eight approved dispensaries, but has yet to open any of them. It has a grow operation running in Thomaston to supply all its locations, and recently announced a lease on a building at 685 Congress St. in Portland. No location has been revealed for the Thomaston or Bangor-area operations it is licensed to operate.

Northeast was planning to open a dispensary in Augusta at 10 Middle Road, an existing building that was proposed to be included in the medical district; but the Planning Board voted 6-2 in August 2010 to remove the site after neighbors objected to the prospect.

Hallowell City Manager Michael Starn said in August that “nobody’s come here” regarding a dispensary. At an April 2010 Hallowell City Council meeting, there was discussion about a moratorium on dispensaries, but no action was taken, he said. It’s unclear whether negotiations leading to selection of the 115 Water St. building would be made public, or addressed in front of the city’s Planning Board.
