Maine nurse practitioners to prescribe medical marijuana

(NECN: Marnie MacLean, Portland, Maine) – Changes to Maine’s medical marijuana law go into effect next week, including one that will now allow nurse practitioners to prescribe medical marijuana to patients.
Today in Portland, nurse practitioners gathered for an educational presentation to learn more about pot and
what advocates say it can do to help patients with a variety of medical conditions.
The fact that marijuana is still illegal under federal law will likely impact how many nurse practitioners actually prescribe medical marijuana but advocates say it’s an important step forward in the state law.

According to Becky DeKeuster from Wellness Connection of Maine which operates four medical marijuana dispensaries in Maine, “Many people in Maine use a nurse practitioner as their primary care provider and they can prescribe pharmaceutical drugs. It makes a whole lot of sense to add this to their list of abilities.”
The new law goes into effect on August 1st.
