KENNEBUNK — A Kennebunkport man was indicted in York County Superior Court on charges alleging he smashed the window of a parked car on Nasons Court and stole a purse with more than $500 inside.

David W. Berthiaume, 20, of 4 Acadia Road in Kennebunkport, has been charged with burglary of a locked motor vehicle, theft by unauthorized taking of an amount greater than $500, criminal mischief and violation of bail conditions. Berthiaume is also facing a civil charge of possession of a usable amount of marijuana.

Kennebunk Police Lt. Tony Bean Burpee said police received a call from a Nasons Court resident on June 13 reporting that the passenger side vehicle of their car had been broken into and a purse was stolen. The resident provided police with descriptions of male subjects seen in the area earlier as well as a description of a vehicle.

Based on those descriptions police were led to Berthiaume and conducted interviews with him as well as others. Bean Burpee said police found money and other evidence in the car, as well as receipts from the Kennebunk Extra Mart from which they obtained video surveillance footage.
