Judge sets lower bail for sex offender accused of assaulting child – Courier

Rockland — A judge set bail Wednesday at $2,000 cash for a 46-year-old Rockland man who is charged with spanking his 3-year-old son so hard that he had to be taken to the hospital.

The prosecution had sought significantly higher bail for Scott A. Kennedy on the charge of Class C felony assault against a child younger than 6-years-old. The assault occurred Monday, Jan. 29, according to court paperwork.

Assistant District Attorney Christopher Fernald cited the criminal record of Kennedy, which includes first degree child molestation from another state, as reason for setting bail at $10,000 cash.

And an affidavit filed Wednesday in Knox County Unified Court by Rockland police indicate that New Hampshire police are investigating how the same 3-year-old boy suffered bruises around his eye on Jan. 3. The boy was taken to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport for that injury.

And the same affidavit states that police are investigating injuries that a man and a woman suffered at Kennedy’s home in Rockland on the day before the child was assaulted. The man and woman claim that Kennedy “lost it” and starting assaulting them after they urged him not to wake up the child who was downstairs asleep with them as they were drinking and smoking marijuana.

Kennedy has not been charged in that incident but Fernald said he is awaiting reports from police on that matter.
