ROCKLAND, Maine — A 30-year-old Warren man was charged with aggravated furnishing of marijuana after the car he was a passenger in crashed head-on into another vehicle, police say.

The drivers of both vehicles were taken to the hospital.

According to Rockland police, Edwin Benito was issued a summons for the offense following the crash that occurred shortly before noon Saturday on Main Street near the intersection of Water Street. Police said Benito tried to pass a half ounce of marijuana off to a female in the vehicle after the crash so that he would not get caught with it. The marijuana and digital scales were recovered by police.

The crash occurred when a 1996 Subaru vehicle — driven by Alicia Carr, 31, of Warren — was heading south on Main Street and made a sudden left turn toward Water Street. Her vehicle struck a northbound 2006 Jeep Liberty driven by Doreen Poland, 75, of Owls Head.

Both vehicles were destroyed, according to the police report.

Carr was treated for minor injuries and released from Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport. Poland was admitted to the hospital with injuries to her lower extremities, according to the police report.

Benito was a passenger in the Carr vehicle.
