Cape Coral is set to welcome its first medical marijuana dispensary, which will be located in an old bank building on SE 47th Terrace.

The city signed a certificate of use this week for Gainesville-based Liberty Health Sciences at 1321 SE 47th Terrace, which currently houses a vacant BBT bank. The company has 11 other locations across the state, with several others coming soon, according to its website.

Yessenia Vargas, director of dispensary operations with Liberty, said the company still needs approval from the Florida Department of Health, and doesn’t yet have a set open date. She said crews will still have to finish some construction and painting on site as well.

“We are very excited to be in that area,” Vargas said of the Cape Coral location. “We anticipate the stores will do well, as the delivery is phenomenal down there.”

Florida allows patients with serious illnesses — such as chronic pain, Parkinson’s disease, cancer and post-traumatic stress disorder — to use cannabis under the guidance of state-certified doctors.
