A medical marijuana dispensary in Auburn is scheduled to open this week, the second to open in the state.

Remedy Compassion, one of five nonprofit organizations licensed to operate marijuana dispensaries in the state, will open Wednesday in the Auburn Plaza, according to the Sun Journal. Last November, the Auburn Planning Board voted unanimously to allow the nonprofit to renovate a former furniture store at the plaza on Center Street, which also houses retail stores including Bed, Bath Beyond and Big Lots. Husband and wife Timothy and Jenna Smale run the nonprofit, and they plan to eventually hire six administrators, seven salespeople and six cultivators. They estimate they will serve about 400 patients in their first year in Androscoggin, Oxford and Franklin counties, according to the paper.

Last year, the state modified its existing medical marijuana law to allow for a total of eight dispensaries around the state. The first dispensary opened in the northern Maine town of Frenchville last month, operated by Safe Alternatives. Maine Organic Therapy in Ellsworth is currently constructing a building for its dispensary.
