The appeal of being a hero transformed one man into a villain.

Kyle Dube, 20, is accused of creating a fake Facebook account to lure Nichole Cable, 15, from her home in Glenburn, Maine so he could kidnap and later “rescue” her. But his depraved scheme fell apart when he allegedly killed the teen girl and dumped her body in the woods Mother’s Day night.

Dube, of Orono, Maine, wanted to “kidnap Nichole and hide her; (so) that he would later find her and be the hero,” said Maine State Police Det. Thomas D. Pickering.

Cable’s mother reported her missing the next day and — after a weeklong search — the girl’s body was found hidden beneath sticks behind a gas station in Old Town on May 20. DNA evidence linked Cable to Dube, according to an affidavit written by Pickering.

Dube was charged with murder and kidnapping the following day. The Penobscot County grand jury indicted him on those charges Wednesday.
