In Wells, Roche edges Millian for selectmen seat

WELLS — Timothy Roche will be the newest member of the Wells Board of Selectmen.

The longtime Wells High School varsity football coach edged out Charles Millian by the slightest of margins with John Stevens rounding out the candidates.

Wells voters elected Roche with 312 votes Tuesday night, June 14. That number was just enough to beat Millian, who received 310. Stevens was the choice of 87 voters, according to the unofficial results after the polls closed.

All three candidates spent most of the day shaking hands with voters, even braving off-and-on rain. Stephens wasn’t present for the announcement of the winner, but longtime acquaintances Roche and Millian were there and embraced each other after the results were released. Once he knew he was the winner, Roche called the win bittersweet.

“I’m a football coach and usually when you win you’re pretty darn happy, but when you’re going against a guy that you respect a lot, who has done a lot for the town over the past 20 years, I don’t know if I’m ecstatic,” he said. “I wish we both could win, especially with the numbers at 310-312, it seems like the voters were saying, ‘We’d like to have you both.'”

Millian said he expected a close vote because of the interactions with voters throughout the day, and he congratulated Roche repeatedly.
