ELLSWORTH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) — Ellsworth is set to become the most recent city in Maine to have a medical marijuana dispensary beginning next month.

City councilors granted Maine Organic Therapy the necessary licenses on Monday to start up the dispensary. A new building has been built for it off of Route 1 in Ellsworth.

Once opened the dispensary will serve medical marijuana patients in Washington and Hancock counties. It is one of eight of its kind in Maine that voters approved by choosing to expand the state’s medical marijuana law back in 2009.

Maine Organic Therapy had to meet requirements set by the Department of Health and Human Services and the city of Ellsworth to get approved. City leaders say the company passed with flying colors.

“They met all the criteria,” said Gary Fortier, who is chairman of the Ellsworth City Council, “”Their application was 100 percent complete. All the department heads that sign off on that stuff were impressed with the organization, the security and everything.”

Maine Organic Therapy says that it is also planning to offer marijuana in foods for those patients who do not like smoking the drug. The company must submit to reviews from the Ellsworth police and fire departments as well as the city’s code enforcement office each year in order to stay licensed.

A grand opening for the facility has been planned for July 2.
